  •  MAC-SSIIM 5th European conference - Towards Knowledge Growth

    22 November 2005, Brussels, Belgium

Nowadays we cannot open a newspaper or a TV channel without getting some buzz words such as "Information society", "knowledge economy", "business intelligence", "piracy", "strategic alliances", etc. and this true! But the main challenge is then for the SMEs, innovators and entrepreneurs. How to make sure that their idea, know-how or key competences will not be stolen or copied when they are going to the market? How SMEs can get fairly protected without being in a closet and excluded from markets?

Patents can be very useful, but they are not the only solution or not always the solution. There is always a need to simple and/or complementary actions in terms of protection, which most of the cases are based on informal management of the Intellectual Property (IP) and Industrial Capital (IC).

MAC-SSIIM aims at providing SMEs and entrepreneurs with training and support solution on how informal management of their intellectual property and industrial capital can help them to open more safely to the market and develop business activities. This training and support solution is a set of tools and modules which can be used extensively in the SME, or better on an ad-hoc basis on a case by case and practical approach by the SME and its accompanying actors (Consultancy, Chambers of Commerce, Professional Bodies, Regional Councils, Federation, ...).

The European conference, will gather all the MAC-SSIIM strategic partners. After an opening keynote speech by the MEP, Mr Virrankoski on "Towards Knowledge Growth", MAC-SSIIM solution will be presented (Training materials and DVDs in 5 languages, IP audit decision tool by Enterprizer linked to MAC-SSIIM training materials, e-Learning platform) as well as tesimonies and feedback from SME, Chamber of Commerce and federation who implemented it.

Finally, MAC-SSIIM has also been a focus point of all partners from the MAC, Multi Actor Cooperation, network since these last 15 years, and now operates under the legal umbrella of MAC-Team network aisbl (international non-profit association). Presentation of MAC-Team aisbl including future developments and project will be made.

Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is mandatory

  •  IP Licensing - Practical and Innovative Strategies for Maximising the Value of your IP Portfolio

21 June 2005, London, United Kingdom

Intellectual property assets today account for 70% or more of the value of many companies. Leveraging those assets, whether through licensing or other mechanisms, has become a vital part of any successful company's business strategy. Potential revenues for many companies from licensing activities can range from millions of euros, pounds and/or dollars per year for small to mid-size companies to well over Ј1 billion annually for companies like Oracle and IBM. This revenue takes on greater significance when the profit margin from a successful licensing program can be 90% or more.

C5's 10th Annual IP Licensing Conference, developed for experienced in-house and private counsel to IP companies as well as corporate executives responsible for the exploitation of their company's IP, is designed to provide you with the state-of-the-art tools and information you need to help your company or your client recognise, maintain, protect and exploit its assets.

  •  Advancing Knowledge and the Knowledge Economy

10-11 January 2005, National Academies, Washington DC - USA

Advancing Knowledge and the Knowledge Economy is an international conference that brings together leading experts to examine how processes for creating and organizing knowledge interact with information technology, business strategy, and changing social and economic conditions. The conference is designed to broaden and deepen common understanding of how difficult-to-measure knowledge resources drive an increasingly virtualized economy and to assess prospects for advancing and regenerating knowledge infrastructure, institutions, and policies.

Presenters will evaluate how distributed models of innovation and learning are empowering users and challenging education, research, and commerce.  They will examine the emergence of software, the Internet, and cyber infrastructure as enablers of knowledge processes, and as scaffolding for producing and using new tools and representations of knowledge. Finally, they will consider how the management and regulation of knowledge differs from the treatment of tangible inputs in terms of the principles, tradeoffs, and policy models.

Jointly organised by: U.S. National Science Foundation; Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development; Research Directorate-General, European Commission; Information Society Directorate-General, European Commission; U.S. Interagency Working Group on IT R&D; and University of Michigan.

  •  Brussels IP2004 - Paneuropean Intellectual Property Summit

2-3 December 2004, Radisson SAS Hotel, Brussels - Belgium

"For the first time ever in public, senior figures from industry, the European Commission, patent and trademark offices, the legal profession and the investment community will meet in Brussels, from 2nd to 3rd December 2004, to discuss how Europe can create an IP infrastructure that will facilitate the Commission's stated goal of making the EU the world's leading knowledge-based economy by 2010.

This event is a follow-up to a major international conference held in Paris on 6th and 7th October 2003 that brought together more than 500 delegates who were professionals from the five IP families: industry decision-makers, patent attorneys, lawyers, administrators and law makers.

Supported from its inception by the various Directorate Generals of the European Commission involved in the process of creating a coherent IP infrastructure for Europe, the summit is promoted by a coalition of independent information-providers: Premier Cercle (Paris), Intellectual Asset Management magazine (London) and The Wall Street Journal Europe (Brussels) with a single goal: to foster a pan-European debate on the future of intellectual property within an enlarged and diversified Europe.

In all of these areas, Senior figures from industry, the Commission, private practice, the judiciary, patent and trademark offices and the investment community will speak. Such high-level representation will ensure a series of top-level and constructive debates. In addition, slots have been created around specific industries. These will examine whether the IP climate in Europe is conducive to companies working in these sectors and, if not, what needs to be done to make sure that things change."

  •  Challenges to European Competitiveness - Industrial Performance and Policy Responses

9 December 2003, Charlemagne Conference Centre, Brussels - Belgium

Slow productivity growth is clearly compromising the competitiveness of Europe’s economies and enterprises, just as EU enlargement presents them with new competitive challenges – and opportunities. The prospect of de-industrialization – whether viewed as a threat or as inevitable economic rationalization - needs to be factored into the thinking of entrepreneurs, economists and policy-makers.

Boosting productivity growth is vital if the enlarged EU single market is to help close the widening gap between its living standards and those of its key competitors.
